Biography
Stephen Mayfield is an associate attorney with Hutchison & Steffen, practicing in the areas of corporate law, asset protection, estate planning, federal tax law, trust & estate litigation and administration, and guardianship. He is admitted to practice in Nevada and Utah.
Stephen advises businesses and individuals on various tax issues within the context of corporate transactions, emerging entities, and estate plans. He assists entrepreneurs form limited liability companies and corporations, and he advises medical professionals with practice administration, compliance and restructuring. His corporate experience includes representing clients with mergers and acquisitions, and preparation of corporate buy-sell agreements, leases, non-disclosure agreements, non-compete agreements, and purchase agreements.
Stephen’s estate planning practice includes preparing complex estate plans through use of revocable living trusts, Nevada asset protection trusts, wills, premarital agreements, FLLCs, ILITS, GRATs, IDGTs and a variety of other sophisticated estate planning devices. Stephen has also prepared numerous 706 estate tax and 709 gift tax returns, and helped non-profit organizations obtain tax exempt status with the IRS.
Stephen is a member of the firm's trust and probate litigation group. He regularly appears in Clark County Probate Court regarding contested and uncontested estate matters and has successfully represented trustees and beneficiaries in evidentiary hearings. He also represents trustees and executors with formal trust and estate administration. Similar to his probate and trust practice, Stephen also practices in Guardianship Court and regularly represents individuals acting for the protection of elderly persons who have been subject to exploitation and elder abuse. His experience includes having been appointed as guardian ad litem by the Guardianship Court.
Stephen is originally from Salt Lake City, UT where he was a devoted skier for many years, including two years where he worked as a Ski Host for Snowbird Ski Resort. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Japanese from the University of Utah. He lived in Japan for three years, including one year while studying at the University of Shinshu in Nagano, Japan. Stephen obtained his Juris Doctorate degree in 2004 from Chicago-Kent Collage of Law (Illinois Institute of Technology), where he received a CALI Award as the top performer in Litigation Technology. He also served as a teaching assistant in Property Law. In 2005, Stephen earned an LL.M. in Taxation from the Denver University Graduate Tax Program with an emphasis on estate planning and small entity taxation.
